President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo inaugurated the new Bridge (replacing the Doña Alicia Syquia Quirino Memorial Bridge) traversing the historic Amburayan River and connecting the provinces of Ilocos Sur and La Union on December 30, 2009. Like the new President Quirino Bridge adjoining the towns of Bantay and Santa, Ilocos Sur, the new bridge is one of the 17 bridges constructed under the President’s Bridge Program Contract Package 1. Said Ilocos Sur-La Union Bridge is described as 535-meter long concrete bridge with a 10-span continuous 2-1 girder, composite deck slab, RC wall-type pier and reversed T-type abutments supported by steel pipe pile foundation. Approach road A is 325 meters long while approach road B is 210 meters long. They had a combined project cost of P557.30 million. The bridges were implemented by the DPWH through the President’s Bridge Program Office, with the Katahia and Engineers International as consultant and the Toyo Nippon Steel Miyahi Joint Venture as contractor. PGMA led the inaugural drive-thru of the Ilocos Sur-La Union Bridge with Ilocos Sur Governor Deogracias Victor Savellano, Japan Ambassador Makoto Katsura, Ilocos Sur 2nd District Rep. Eric Singson, La Union Governor Manuel Ortega, Deputy National Security Adviser Luis Chavit Singson and Tagudin Mayor Hon. Roque S. Verzosa, Jr.
